Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions developers and B2B teams ask most.

How does the VIN Doc API work?

VIN Doc is an API-first vehicle history platform. You authenticate with an API key, send a VIN or license plate to a single endpoint, and receive a structured JSON report that cross-references 2,500+ checkpoints from 8,000+ sources across 25+ countries. Reports resolve in ~55 seconds on average. The payload covers mileage verification, accident history, theft records, inspections, emissions data and more, ready to render in your own product.

What is a VIN and what format does the endpoint expect?

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle, with no letters I, O or Q. The lookup endpoint accepts the raw VIN string; you can also query by license plate plus an ISO country code. We validate and normalize the input before resolving, and return a clear error object if the identifier is malformed.

How fast is a single API call?

Synchronous VIN decode returns in a few hundred milliseconds. A full history lookup is processed asynchronously and typically resolves in under a minute: submit requests in bulk and subscribe to a webhook that fires when each report is ready, so you never have to block a request or poll aggressively. Rate limits and concurrency depend on your plan.

How is API usage billed?

Usage is metered per successful report. Bulk and fleet customers pre-purchase report credits at volume pricing, shared across all API keys on the account. Cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported, and enterprise accounts can pay by bank transfer against monthly invoices.

Can I get a refund or credit for a failed lookup?

Calls that fail to resolve or return incomplete data are not charged, and any credits consumed are restored automatically. If you believe a billed report was inaccurate, contact support with the request ID and we will review it. See our Refund Policy for full details.

Which countries does the API cover?

VIN Doc resolves vehicles registered across 25+ countries, with particularly deep coverage in the European Union and the United Kingdom. The response indicates which data fields are available per country, so you can handle coverage gaps gracefully in your integration.

How reliable is the mileage data we return?

Mileage verification cross-references official inspections, service records, insurance databases and other verified sources, and flags suspected rollbacks directly in the payload. No system is 100% infallible, but the multi-source approach gives you one of the most dependable mileage signals available to build on.

Do you support fleets and high-volume integrations?

Yes. Dealerships, insurers, leasing firms and fleet managers run on bulk endpoints, webhook callbacks, official SDKs and shared credit pools, with a dedicated technical contact for onboarding. See the Business page or talk to our team to scope volume pricing and integration support.
